Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal Nail Infections: Symptoms and Treatments

Fungal nail infections are usually cosmetic problems caused by the growth of fungi in and around the nails and nail beds. These fungal infections are very common and usually affect the toenails more than the fingernails.

What are the symptoms of fungal nail infections?

Nails that are infected with a fungus may become discolored (yellowish-brown or opaque,) thick and brittle, and may separate from the rest of that nail. In some cases, the nail may even crumble. The dark, moist and warm environment of shoes can promote fungal growth. In addition, injury to the nail can put you at a greater risk for a fungal infection. On rare occasions, the nail may be painful and/or give off a foul odor.

Can fungal nail infections be treated?

Yes, these nail infections are treatable however, they can be quite difficult to treat. Medications that can be applied directly to the nail are available, but they only help with a small number of fungal nail problems. Other treatment options include oral medications (pills) or ointments that may need to be prescribed by your doctor. You may also have to go through a periodic removal of the damaged nail tissues.
