Plantar Warts

Plantar Warts: What They are and How to Treat Them.

What are Plantar Warts?

A Plantar Wart looks like one or more calluses on the ball of the foot or on the heel. They may appear to have small pinholes or tiny black spots in the center. These warts are usually painful and may develop singly or in clusters. Plantar warts are caused by a virus that infects the outer layer of skin on the soles of the feet.

Be mindful if you suspect you have a plantar wart as they are very spreadable. They are spread through skin-to-skin contact (handshakes or hugs) and/or by touching a contaminated surface (blanket or doorknob).

How should a plantar wart be treated?

Treatments include over-the-counter remedies, salicylic acid, freezing medicine, or surgery. DO NOT use over-the-counter medications to dissolve the wart by yourself. Your doctor may also suggest tissue scraping. This is the removal of tissue by scraping or scooping with a medical tool called a curette. It can also be helpful to soak your feet in warm water to soothe painful muscles and joints as well as help drain skin infections. Do not try to “dig out” your wart or remove the black dot. While it may look like a seed or root (also sometimes referred to as a core), what you are really seeing is a blood vessel. If you are not sure if you have a plantar wart or a callus, let your doctor decide.
